John entered the U.S. Marine Corp. when he was 19 years old. He saw much combat in WW11, especially during the capture of the island of Iwo Jima. When he returned to Pennsylvania, he joined the PA State Police. The transition was easy with little affecting him in his law enforcement career. Through several promotions, he became a Captain and a Troop Commander. His custom at work was to read the newspaper at the start of each day to ensure that he was aware of the activity in the area that his troopers covered. One day, a sergeant, who had an adjacent office to the Captain, heard rapid clatter of the office manager's high heel shoes as she burst into the Captains office. "Sir," she shouted, "did you hear that the pope has been shot?" Peering over his newspaper, with glasses perched on the end of his nose, he replied, "Did it happen in our Troop ? "No Sir." "Well there is nothing we need to do," he said casually as he returned to his paper. After experiencing many dangerous and trying situations while in war as well as during many years in the PA State Police, this Captain had learned how to find peace in difficult times.
In law enforcement, the military, or as first responders, we are often exposed to many life-threatening situations, and it is imperative to remain calm. Many have learned that the true peace that we need comes from our Creator. Peter 5:7 says, "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." Psalm 29:11 reminds us, "The Lord gives strength to His people; the Lord blesses His people with peace."
If we only desire a small piece of God in our lives, we will similarly have only that same measure of His peace in them. Brian G. Jett, author/song writer.
